After starting 0-3 and fighting tooth-and-nail for a playoff spot, Ontario has come full circle to win the Canadian mixed curling championship. Ontario beat Manitoba 11-6 Saturday in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory.
John Epping’s rink scored three in the fifth end and four more in the ninth to clinch the championship.
“It was back and forth for a while and then really, that one end turned the game around, when we stole three in the fifth,” said Epping. “We knew this would probably be the toughest team we’d face.”
Epping’s team includes lead Leigh Armstrong, second Scott Foster and third Julie Reddick.
After a convincing win over Quebec in the semifinal, Ontario knew it was in tough against David Hamblin’s Manitoba rink. Manitoba was on top of the standings for the last four draws of the round-robin and clinched a bye to the final.
Hamblin won the world junior championship just three years ago, along with second Ross Derksen.
Despite the fierce competition, Epping and company took advantage with two big ends to leave Hamblin’s team disappointed.
“We just didn’t play well from start to finish,” Hamblin stated. “It was one of those days where we were off.”
Ontario curled at 73 per cent in the final, compared to just 69 for Manitoba.
