Gushue earns Olympic berth in Halifax

HALIFAX (CP) - Brad Gushue will realize his childhood dream and represent Canada at the 2006 Winter Olympics.

Gushue, of St. John’s, N.L., won a nailbiter over Winnipeg’s Jeff Stoughton in Sunday’s final of the Tim Hortons Canadian Curling Trials in Halifax.

The turning point in the game came in the fourth end when Stoughton came up light on a draw with his final rock, allowing Gushue a steal of two and a 6-2 lead.

Stoughton fought his way back with a deuce in the eighth end and after Gushue was forced to take a single in the ninth the lead had been reduced to 8-6

Stoughton scored a single with his final draw but a second stone that would have tied the game was measured and found just outside the rings and Gushue won 8-7.

A move earlier this year to add two-time Brier champion Russ Howard to his lineup paid off for Gushue, who had Howard call the shots during the trials while throwing second stones.
