Stoughton to appeal $1000 fine

REGINA (CP) - Manitoba skip Jeff Stoughton says he’ll appeal his $1,000 fine for unsportsmanlike conduct at the Canadian men’s curling championship.

The Canadian Curling Association disciplined Stoughton after he kicked rocks and slamming his broom in a game against New Brunswick on Wednesday, but Stoughton also said he was told by the CCA he had been accumulating offences, some of which he was unaware.

“I thought they would at least let me know I was accumulating some fines,” Stoughton said Thursday. “We’ll write a letter and see what they do.”

Bakker stepping aside

There will be a new face on Team Kleibrink next season.

The Calgary-based curling rink announced yesterday Glenys Bakker is leaving the fold of the Olympic bronze medallists.

Bakker, second, has elected to step down because skip Shannon Kleibrink, third Amy Nixon and lead Christine Keshen are ramping up the competitive schedule next season.

Paralympics: Canada plays for gold in curling

PINEROLO, Italy (CP) - Skip Chris Daw made two clutch shots in the final end to steal a single point for a 5-4 win over Norway on Friday that sent Canada to the gold medal game in wheelchair curling at the Paralympics.

The game was tied 4-4 in the sixth and final end. Daw, from London, Ont., first did a raise that tapped his own rock into the four-foot ring to count as shot. On his second stone, he threw a perfect guard.
