REGINA — A trio of former Brier champions is atop the field heading into Monday’s action here at the 2006 Tim Hortons Brier.

Manitoba’s Jeff Stoughton defeated Newfoundland’s Ken Peddigrew 6-4 Sunday night, while Ontario’s Glenn Howard defeated Saskatchewan’s Pat Simmons 10-5 to improve both teams to 3-0 and put them in a three-way tie for first with Alberta’s Kevin Martin.

Stoughton wasn’t pleased Sunday night with the quality of his team’s play through their first three games and suggested he felt fortunate to still be unbeaten.

“Bonus, eh?” Stoughton laughed.

Howard said he also felt fortunate Sunday night after giving up a four-ender in the second end to Saskatchewan but then roaring back to outscore his opponents 10-1 through the balance of the game.

“I’m so happy with our guys — we didn’t get upset, we didn’t get down.”

Simmons, on the other hand, was dejected after his last rock of the eighth end picked up some debris, leaving Howard an open hit for a game-ending five instead of what should have been a difficult draw for a deuce.

“If we’re going to get breaks like that,” said Simmons, “we’re not going to get any better.”

In other games Sunday night, Quebec’s Jean-Michel Menard beat Nova Scotia’s Mark Dacey 11-6, while BC’s Brian Windsor defeated Northern Ontario’s Robbie Gordon 7-5.

The victories by Quebec and BC improved their round-robin records to 2-1 and puts them in a two-way tie for fourth place heading into Monday.

Five teams are tied at 1-2 — Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, NWT/Yukon and PEI.

Northern Ontario and Saskatchewan are still winless at 0-3.

The Brier resumes Monday morning when Ontario takes on New Brunswick, Quebec plays PEI, Saskatchewan faces Alberta and Nova Scotia meets NWT/Yukon.
