KAMLOOPS, February 4, 2006…Glenn Howard of Coldwater, Ontario has advanced to Sunday’s men’s final of the Strauss Canada Cup, taking place at the Interior Savings Centre.
Saturday afternoon, in a battle of section winners, Howard managed to score a deuce in the 10th end on a hit and stay to win, 5-4, after Kevin Martin of Edmonton came up a tad light on a draw with his final stone. It was a well-curled cross-over Page Playoff game, as both Howard and Martin recorded 91%, while Martin’s team had a slight 94%-91% edge.
Howard had finished on top in Section A with a 4-1 record while Martin, the defending Cup champion, was unbeaten at 5-0 in Section B.
The result meant that Howard will now await the winner of tonight’s (8:00 pm PT) semi-final between Martin and John Morris of Calgary. Morris made quick work of Kelowna’s Bob Ursel in the A2 vs B2 game, taking an 8-1 decision after six ends.
Morris, who also finished with a 4-1 record in Section A, but placed second since he lost, 7-3, to Glenn Howard during the round robin, stole a single in the second, a deuce in the third and another deuce in the sixth to capture the battle of former world junior champions. Morris’ front end of Ben Hebert and Marc Kennedy were a perfect 100%, as the Morris team fired 94% to Ursel’s 76%.
The men’s final, to be seen live on CBC-TV at 9:00 am PT/12 Noon ET on Sunday, offers a $33,500 prize to the winner.
